Team assessment: how healthy is your team?

A three-minute team health check for managers. Slide to rate 12 statements about your team and see straight away where it's strong, where it's stuck, and what to do first.

How it works: this team assessment covers the six foundations of an engaged, high-performing team from the book Be More Human: trust, a shared story, values in action, strengths, ownership and how the team handles pressure. For each statement, slide from 0 (not true at all) to 100 (always true). Answer for your team as it is today, not as you'd like it to be.

1. People on my team raise problems and admit mistakes early, without waiting to be asked.
Slide
2. My team knows I'll back them when something goes wrong, even when it's awkward for me.
Slide
3. Everyone on my team could explain, in their own words, where we're heading and why it matters.
Slide
4. My team helped shape that direction, rather than having it handed to them.
Slide
5. Our organisation's values show up in how my team actually makes decisions day to day.
Slide
6. When someone acts against those values, it gets talked about openly and fairly.
Slide
7. I know what each person on my team is best at and what gives them energy.
Slide
8. Most people on my team spend most of their time on work that plays to their strengths.
Slide
9. When something goes wrong, people look at what they could have done differently before looking for someone to blame.
Slide
10. Commitments made in our meetings get followed through without me chasing.
Slide
11. When the pressure is on, my team stays calm and works the problem together.
Slide
12. We talk about how people are really doing, not just about the work.

What this team assessment measures

Most team assessments measure output. This one looks at the conditions that produce it. Each area gets two statements:

These are the areas where a manager has the most influence, and engagement is mostly decided at that level: the manager accounts for at least 70% of the difference in engagement between teams.1

How to use your results with your team

Your score is your view of the team. To check it, ask your team to take the same assessment and bring the results to a team meeting. Don't argue about the numbers. Ask where the biggest gaps are between how you see things and how they do, and pick one area to work on together for a month. Then take it again.

Questions people ask

How long does the team assessment take?

About three minutes. There are 12 statements, two for each of six areas. You slide each one from 0 to 100, and you see your score as soon as you finish.

Should I take it on my own or with my team?

Start on your own, as an honest read of where your team is. For a fuller picture, ask your team to take it too and compare answers. The gaps between how you see the team and how they see it are often the most useful part.

Is this a replacement for an employee engagement survey?

No. An organisation-wide survey measures engagement across many teams. This is a quick check a manager can use any time, to decide where to focus between surveys.

What happens to my answers?

Your score is worked out in your browser and shown straight away. Nothing is sent unless you choose to leave your email for the action plan. If you do, we email you your results and plan, and your email and scores are sent to Caspar Craven.
